Q: How can I tell if I'm eligible for a free upgrade to FTM 2017?

A: It's simple. If you purchased a copy of MacKiev edition (FTM 2014.1 or Mac 3.1) for $29.95 or more then FTM 2017 is free. If you didn't, it's not. Note that buying the $10 CD, $14 USB or $20 Family Pack don't count. If you don't remember if you purchased a MacKiev edition, you can click here to go to our Verification Center (make sure that the email address you enter is the same one that you used when you purchased your MacKiev edition).

PRODUCT INFORMATION

Q: Why would I want to upgrade to FTM 2017 from my current version?

Here are some top reasons you may want to upgrade:

1. To sync with an Ancestry tree. (No other FTM editions will).2. To sync two or more FTM trees with one Ancestry tree with FamilySync™.3. To discover the crossed lines of your ancestors with color coding. 4. To fix faded old photos with our new Photo Darkroom™ tools. 5. To add a new free data source with FamilySearch integration.6. To keep using Ancestry search and merge. (Older editions no longer will).

For more information about the new features, check out the articles on support.familytreemaker.com.

Q: Will FTM 2017 work on the same operating systems as FTM 2014?  Are there versions available for tablets and phones?

A: FTM 2017 is available for Windows PC and Mac, and we have updated system requirements for both. We do not currently have tablet or phone app versions available.

For PC, Windows 7 and later are fully supported, including Windows 10. FTM 2017 will not launch on Windows Vista or Windows XP. For Mac users, macOS 10.9 and later, including 10.12 Sierra are supported. FTM 2017 will no longer launch on mac OS 10.8 or earlier.

DVDs AND USBs

Q: Do I need to buy a DVD or USB version, or just the download?

A: The backup DVD and USB are optional add-ons and not strictly necessary - they're useful if you prefer to install from physical media, or to have on hand to easily reinstall if you need to.  The USB also contains utilities and instructions for transferring tree files, as well as free space for file transfer and/or storage.

Q: What is in the optional FTM 2017 USB drive?

A: The natural wood USB drive contains a Mac installer and a Windows installer of FTM 2017. It also contains 2 GB of storage which is handy for moving trees from one computer to another. And a complete set of conversion tools that would allow you to open literally every Family Tree Maker tree file ever created, all the way back to version 1.0 that came on floppy discs in 1989.

Q: I bought one of those wooden FTM flash drives with FTM 2014.1. Can I convert that to FTM 2017 somehow?

A: Yes. Just order the FTM 2017 download and you will be able to swap the new installer for the old one on the USB drive (or keep them both if you like, there’s plenty of room). We will have a support article with step by step instructions on how to do that available very soon.

Q: I've pre-ordered FTM 2017 and now I want to add a backup DVD, USB, or Family Pack, how do I do so?

A: When you receive the email notifying you to pick up your download, you will find a link to the Upgrade Center to confirm your order and be given the opportunity to add on a backup DVD, USB or Family Pack upgrade.  The price to add these items is the same as during the pre-sale - $10 for a backup DVD or $20 for a backup USB, plus $5.95 shipping and handling.

Q: When will I be receiving the DVD or USB I pre-ordered?

A: FTM 2017 DVDs began shipping in the US and Canada on Aug. 25, on Sep. 1 in AU and Sep. 4 in the UK.  FTM 2017 USBs began shipping in the US and Canada on Sep. 6, with the UK and AU to follow shortly after.

When your DVD or USB is shipped you will receive a shipping notification by email.  Allow a week or so after that for delivery.  Note that everyone who purchases a DVD or USB drive copy will also automatically get a download link to use in the meantime.

FAMILY PACKS AND PLUGINS

Q: How can I tell if I need to purchase a Family Pack Upgrade?

A: You need a Family Pack Upgrade only if a) there's more than one computer in your home, AND b) there's more than one FTM user there. So for example, if you are the only FTM user in your home, you can have FTM on your PC desktop computer and your Mac laptop and will not need a Family Pack license. Note that platform doesn't matter now that the Mac and Windows editions are equivalent, and both a Mac and a Windows installer are included with all versions (including downloads, discs and USB drives).

Q: If I've already purchased a Family Pack Upgrade for a FTM 2014.1 or 3.1, do I need to buy it again for FTM 2017?

A: No. Family Pack Upgrades purchased for earlier MacKiev editions of Family Tree Maker (FTM 2014.1 and Mac 3.1) are valid for FTM 2017 too. That is, when you obtain a single license for FTM 2017, you don’t need to purchase a Family Pack extension for multiple users and computers.

Q: Are Charting Companion and Family Book Creator being updated for FTM 2017?

A: Yes, both plugins have free updates available from their publishers now that FTM 2017 is released. Please note that these plugins only work with the Windows version so far, though we have implemented the same plug-in architecture on Mac and are working with our plugin publishers to make Mac editions available in the future. Click here for Charting Companion and click here for Family Book Creator.

DOWNLOAD AND INSTALLATION

Q: If I buy FTM 2017 do I need to download and install it right away when it's released?

A: You can download and install FTM 2017 any time you like.  So it's fine to download only when you are ready to install it, whenever that is, even if it's quite some time from now. If you wait so long that the link has expired, we will be happy to reset it for you.

Q: Do I need to have a previous version installed in order to upgrade to FTM 2017?

A: No. Each user will be getting a personalized installer link, installer and application that identifies them so having a previous edition installed will not be required.

Q: After download and installing FTM 2017, am I safe to remove my previous version?A: We suggest leaving it installed for at least a few days while you're getting started with the new version.

Q: Should I do anything with my trees to prepare for FTM 2017?

A: We only recommend that you make a full back up (File>Backup) of your tree, which can be copied to an external disc drive or to a cloud storage provider like Dropbox. For detailed instructions on making a full backup, please click here for Windows or click here for Mac.

Q: How do I transfer my files into FTM 2017?

If you are upgrading to FTM 2017 from a MacKiev edition (FTM 2014.1 or 3.1), then you should see your list of trees in the Plan workspace when you first open the program.  Otherwise, you can Import an Existing Tree on the Plan workspace, or can go to File>Restore to open up a backup.ing

Family Tree Maker 2017 - Important Q&As

Since the announcement from Ancestry and MacKiev last week about Ancestry shutting down TreeSync on 29 March 2017 (US time), which will then be replaced by MacKiev’s FamilySync, there has been non-stop questions about it all. So just what does it all mean? I will try to address a number of the questions here.

Q. I use Family Tree Maker and I have my tree online on Ancestry. What should I do before 29 March 2017 (US time)? Good question, and a very important one.– If you sync your tree with Ancestry be sure sync all your changes, and then do an export of your tree from Ancestry. If you’re not sure how to do that, you can find on exporting your family tree from Ancestry here.– If you’re planing on upgrading to FTM 2017, do so before March 31, to take advantage of MacKiev’s special upgrade price.– And make sure you have extra backup copies before importing into any new program.

Q. I have Family Tree Maker 2012 or 2014, and I want to continue to be able to sync my tree with Ancestry. What do I need to do?You will need to buy Family Tree Maker 2017 Upgrade. You can do that through MacKiev, it is launching on 31 March 2017. Keep an eye on www.familytreemaker.com.

Q. I had FTM 2014, and then got the free update to FTM 2014.1 from Mackieve. Do I need to pay for FTM 2017?If you had FTM 2014 or FTM Mac 3, and updated either to FTM 2014.1 or FTM Mac 3.1 with the FREE version, yes you will need to pay for FTM 2017.

Q. I bought a copy of FTM 2014.1 or FTM Mac 3.1, do I need to pay for FTM 2017?If you PAID for a copy of FTM 2014.1 or Mac 3.1 (both introduced in March 2016), your copy of FTM 2017 is FREE and you will be notified by email when yours is available. In case you’re not sure whether you purchased a copy from MacKiev or not, they have set up a Verification Center so you can find out. Note: buying media (CD, DVD or USB) or additional licenses (Family Pack) while picking up a free update does not qualify as buying the update itself.

Q. How much does it cost to Upgrade to FTM 2017 If ordered by 31 March 2017 for those in Australia the price is AUD$39.95 (click here). If ordered afterwards the Australian the price is AUD$49.95. Note: these prices are for the DOWNLOAD version only … if you want a CD or USB edition, there is an extra cost!

Q. What are the system requirements for FTM 2017?Win: Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, 675MB hard drive space, 2GB RAM.Mac: MacOS 10.9 Mavericks, 10.10 Yosemite, 10.11 El Capitan, 10.12 Sierra, 675MB hard drive space, 2GB RAM.

Q. I don’t have a CD drive on my computer? How can I install FTM 2017? No problem, you can either buy the download version, or choose to buy the USB version.

Q. I want to put the Family Tree Maker 2017 on more than one computer, can I do that?Yes you can, but you will need to purchase a Family Pack Licence, which allows for use on up to 3 computers, as opposed to the Standard User Licence option which only allows you to install it on one computer.

Q. Is there a detailed list of what works in FTM 2017 but will stop working in older editions? Here’s the list of the features that were in TreeSync that will continue to be available through FamilySync in FTM 2017:– Syncing an FTM tree with an Ancestry tree– Searching Ancestry’s databases directly from within FTM and merging data into your tree– Ancestry Hints from within FTM (hints still appear on Ancestry Member Trees)|– Tree upload/download– Some Web Dashboard Information (though the rest is available online in your Ancestry.com account)– Map View– View Source Online – links from sources saved from Ancestry that open the record online

Q. Where can I buy Family Tree Maker 2017?You can purchase the program from MacKiev, or VicGUM for those in Australia.

Q. When will Family Tree Maker 2017 be available? MacKiev are saying it will be released on 31 March 2017. While VicGUM say they will have stock ‘soon’.

Q. I have an older version of Family Tree Maker, but don’t use the sync function, but will I still be able to use my program?Sure, if you’re simply using the program as a program to enter, and not linking it to any online tree, then there’s no issue. Although the shakey leaf hints won’t work anymore.

Q. Where can I get further help? FACEBOOK – The Family Tree Maker Group on Facebook is active, as is the Family Tree Maker Users Group. Both are a place you can ask questions and learn from other users.AUSTRALIAN SUPPORT – VicGUM are the Australian distributors of the program, and are offering support for FTM users. You can contact them by email [email protected], or phone on (03) 9078 4738.LIVE CHAT – To find out how to start a live chat session with the MacKiev support team, you should sign up for the Family Tree Maker mailing list at www.familytreemaker.com. The welcome note contains lots of useful information like how to get technical support, free updates, discounted upgrades, and replacement copies.

Family Tree Maker 2017 – 24 June 2017 Update

Quite a bit of progress has been made over the past few weeks. If you look at the FTM 2017 Release Page, you will see that they are currently in the midst of the Test Drive 2.0 release, and are looking at a July 15, 2017 release date for everybody, as in it will be out of beta.

Note/Commentary: MacKiev (and Ancestry.com by proxy) continue to receive a lot of criticism in regards to the delayed release/launch, and the length of the beta testing. If you remove the synchronizing of the family trees with Ancestry.com, I believe Family Tree Maker 2017 could have been released in March of this year. However, that synchronizing is exactly why a lot of people use FTM. A lot of people do not realize that FTM 2017 is using a new synchronizing service that Ancestry.com rolled out (to replace the older service), and it could not be tested until the older synchronizing service was shut down. Additionally, because it was a new service from Ancestry.com, it had to be debugged and had to be checked to guarantee that people would not lose data when synchronizing between their local family trees and their online trees hosted through Ancestry.com. It became especially difficult the larger your family tree is (getting into the tens of thousands and above), and this new service was found to have some issues, including negatively impacting the performance of other Ancestry.com infrastructure. Those issues are very nearly worked out, and we are reaching a point where people can be comfortable with synchronizing their genealogy information and not worrying about losing data.

While there has been criticism/noise about the lengthy beta-testing, the amount of outcry that would have ensued had FTM 2017 been rolled out without adequate testing of the new Ancestry.com services would have been tremendous if people started losing data, or were unable to fully synchronize (as in, during the actual process, the services timed out and stopped synchronizing). And keep in mind that Ancestry.com has not only had to improve/fix the new service multiple times just for FTM 2017 syncing, they are facing the fact that RootsMagic will also be synchronizing genealogy data with Ancestry.com for the first time in an upcoming update, putting more load/stress on the Ancestry.com infrastructure.

All of this is not helped by the fact that there are plenty of people who do not use FTM and/or Ancestry.com, and felt the need to jump in and criticize the companies involved without knowing the issues involved. This is reminiscent of the Mac vs PC flame wars, Intel vs AMD, etc., and it’s something the genealogy community has always had (FTM vs RootsMagic vs Legacy, etc.).

Back to the update: MacKiev posted this message earlier this week, discussing the improvements that have been made as far as synchronizing your Family Tree Maker 2017 database and Ancestry.com:

We have been testing a new build series over the the past five days, and the results have been well beyond our expectations, in syncing, performance, and stability. We’ve met our goal of handling even the largest trees — which is why it has been nicknamed the “all trees” build. And according to our beta testers and engineers, if we had a build like this back on March 31st, we would have released it. It’s that good.

Our new “all trees” build will make it’s debut this weekend as part of Test Drive 2.0, an improved “getting started” program in which users take FTM 2017 for a spin, and two days later we do a diagnostic test to see how the ride has gone. If everything checks out OK, they just get to keep on using FTM 2017. If not, we can provide whatever attention is needed to help get everyone off to a good start.

For those wanting to know when it will be released, they have this message:

After Test Drive 2.0 gets started this weekend, we’ll monitor the “all-trees” build for 2-3 weeks, and assuming all goes well, by July 15th we expect to be ready to officially declare FTM 2017 released and start producing discs and USB drives. And since the “all trees” build is suitable for all trees, as previously announced our pre-order discount sale will end when Test Drive 2.0 begins. The price is still $29.95 for a download until then.

New Tree Safety features have also been added, that are meant to prevent accidental deletion of people in your family trees, and they will be added in the Test Drive 2.0 release:1. A deletion warning message.2. Sync deletions marked in red.3. Starting sync requires a click. By default, you will need to click a “Continue” button to accept the changes that are shown and start syncing – it will no longer be automatic after 60 seconds (like the older versions of FTM).
